Sourcing Folding Carton Packaging from India: A Buyer's Guide

Buyers sourcing folding carton packaging from India need to specify more than artwork before requesting a quote. A complete folding carton RFQ should define board specification, print process, finishing, compliance requirements, and structural expectations before pricing discussions begin.
India's folding carton manufacturing sector supplies FMCG, pharmaceutical, D2C, electronics, and retail packaging to domestic and international markets. Production is concentrated in offset-printing-capable converters across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
This guide covers what buyers need to specify before requesting a first quote.
What board materials are available for folding carton in India?
Commonly used substrates in Indian folding carton production include:
Duplex board : coated white on one side, grey back. Used for standard consumer packaging: food products, personal care, general retail. Widely available across Indian converters at competitive pricing. Offset printing results are well suited for CMYK process printing.
Solid Bleached Sulphate (SBS) : white on both sides, chemically pulped and bleached. Used for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and premium consumer packaging where print quality and caliper consistency are critical. SBS is widely used where high print fidelity, whiteness, and caliper consistency are required and supports specialty processes including spot UV and hot foil stamping.
Folding Box Board (FBB) : Multi-layer virgin fibre board with mechanical pulp middle layers and chemical pulp outer layers. Widely used for pharmaceutical, cosmetics, frozen food, and premium retail packaging where stiffness-to-weight ratio and printability are important.
Coated Unbleached Kraft (CUK) : natural brown interior with a coated white top surface. Used for premium retail and food-safe applications where a kraft aesthetic is required. Food-contact suitability depends on coating systems, barrier layers, ink systems, and regulatory compliance for the intended application.
Common folding carton materials range from 180 to 380 GSM depending on substrate and application, with the selection based on structural requirements, print quality needed, and pack weight. Specify board type and GSM. "Cardboard" is not a specification.
Structural performance requirements such as stacking strength, compression performance, or transport durability should be discussed separately for heavier products or export shipments.
Which printing process should I specify?
Sheetfed offset printing is the dominant process for folding carton in India for runs typically above 3,000 to 5,000 units. It produces high print quality with reliable Pantone colour matching. Specify Pantone references for all brand colours, not "red" or "navy blue". For brand-critical packaging, approve a printed colour proof or press sample before bulk production begins. Final artwork approval responsibility and sign-off ownership should be defined before production begins.
Digital printing suits short runs where offset setup costs would be disproportionate. Colour consistency across very large repeat runs may differ from offset workflows depending on press technology, substrate, and calibration discipline.
Flexo printing is used for specific folding carton applications in India, particularly pharmaceutical cartons, food-contact packaging where water-based inks are required, and high-volume simple print runs. Offset remains the dominant choice for premium graphics and complex brand-colour work in folding cartons. If your brief requires precise Pantone matching across a complex design, offset is typically the preferred specification. If your brief involves pharma serialisation, traceability printing, or sustainability requirements around water-based inks, ask your converter whether flexo is appropriate for your specific application. For pharmaceutical and retail applications, confirm barcode readability and variable-data print requirements during sampling and approval.
What lamination options are available?
Standard lamination finishes available across Indian folding carton converters:
Gloss lamination : standard, high sheen, most commonly used finish.
Matte lamination : premium appearance, low light reflection, reduced fingerprint visibility.
Soft-touch lamination : tactile premium finish, higher cost, used for premium cosmetic and consumer electronics packaging.
Anti-scratch lamination : used for applications with high surface contact.
Specify the lamination type explicitly. Unspecified lamination defaults to gloss.
Buyers with sustainability requirements should specify recycled fibre content, FSC certification requirements, or restrictions on plastic laminations at the RFQ stage.
What does FSSAI compliance require for food contact cartons?
For cartons in direct or indirect contact with food, the applicable regulation in India is the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018, administered by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
As of April 3, 2025, FSSAI reclassified food-grade packaging material from "non-critical" to "critical" in its inspection checklists across all food business sectors. The inspection scoring for packaging compliance was increased from 2 to 4 points. Packaging materials in direct contact with food are increasingly expected to be supported by Certificates of Conformity from NABL-accredited laboratories during audits and inspections. Many food businesses no longer rely solely on converter declarations for compliance verification.
Require a Certificate of Conformity from an NABL-accredited laboratory for any carton in direct or indirect contact with food. State this requirement in the enquiry. Do not assume compliance is standard or that a converter's self-declaration satisfies current requirements.
If you are sourcing cartons from India for sale in export markets: food contact compliance requirements at the destination market apply separately from FSSAI. For the EU, the overarching framework is Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, with member state regulations applying to paper and board specifically. For the UK, equivalent retained legislation applies post-Brexit. The EU PPWR, in force from February 2025, also introduces PFAS limits on food-contact packaging effective August 2026. Confirm destination market compliance requirements with your regulatory adviser before placing a production order.
What are the typical MOQ and lead time norms?
| Format | Typical MOQ | Lead Time |
|---|---|---|
| Standard monocarton, 1–4 colour offset | 5,000–10,000 units | 4–5 weeks including sampling |
| Premium SBS, 5+ colour with lamination | 10,000–25,000 units | 5–7 weeks including sampling |
| Short-run digital | 500–2,000 units | 2–3 weeks |
These are typical ranges for standard folding carton work. Specialty processes (soft-touch, hot foil, embossing) extend lead times. Confirm exact norms with your specific converter.
Five things to specify before requesting a quote
- Board type and GSM range (Duplex / SBS / CUK, with GSM)
- Dimensions of the assembled carton in millimetres: length × width × height
- Printing: number of colours, Pantone references for all brand colours, sides to be printed
- Lamination type (or explicitly "no lamination")
- Food contact compliance requirement: yes or no, with the regulation name if yes

EPR for paper packaging - effective April 2026
India's Ministry of Environment has issued EPR rules for packaging made from paper, effective April 1, 2026. Any producer, importer, or brand owner placing paper packaging including folding cartons into the Indian market must register with the CPCB and meet recycling targets: 70% of packaging waste recycled or reused by 2026-27, increasing to 100% by 2028-29.
If you are an international buyer sourcing folding carton packaging from India for products sold in the Indian market, EPR obligations may apply depending on which entity introduces the packaged product into the Indian market. Confirm registration and compliance requirements with the CPCB portal or a local compliance adviser before your first production run.
Three mistakes that delay production
Specifying finished-pack weight instead of board GSM. The converter needs board GSM to select stock. Pack weight and board GSM are related but not directly convertible without knowing the structural design.
Requesting a quote without a die line. The die line (the cutting and creasing pattern) determines material usage and therefore price. A quote without a die line is an estimate. Send the die line.
Not sampling before confirming the bulk order. Sample approval, reviewed against written acceptance criteria, must precede bulk production confirmation. A converter who will not produce a pre-production sample for buyer approval before committing to bulk production is a risk.
